There is a great Simpsons episode where the town tries to blow up a dead whale

...with unsurprisingly mixed results.

Then lo and behold I saw a feature on some programme the other day about how a small beach town tried to do exactly that in the 60s/70s. They thought it would create thousands of tiny pieces which would simply be picked off by scavanging birds

Just as in the Simpsons (whose writers were clearly inspired by this tale) it didn't really work and it actually sent large flesh chunks in to the air which rained down, totalling at least one car.

So, then they just buried the remains of the poor f**ker in the beach. It was really very funny.
