My dad had a stint as a rear gunner and

said the worst thing about each mission was the thought of the landing. Many years ago I got him and his old mate talking about their flying experiences. This other guy was a pilot and explained how sometimes they'd overstay their welcome and would be low on fuel heading home so he'd have to keep flying at an angle (the plane not him!) to keep the fuel supplied to the engines. Apparently more than once they thought they wouldn't make it back. Heroes all of them even though from their standpoint they were only doing a job so it was nothing to them.
