definitive answers....

vol?ley (vl)
n. pl. vol?leys

3. Sports
a. The flight of a ball before it touches the ground: kicked the soccer ball on the volley.

half-volley
(Individual Sports, other than specified) to hit or kick (a ball) immediately after it bounces

which I guess makes sense if you concur that volley actually refers to the flight of the ball rather than to the act of kicking it. So, he hit it on the volley is right. Volleyed is wrong.
