Stoyr I've heard is that he assumed responsibility for the debts...

... but didn't actually pay them off and effectively become the creditor himself (a la Abramovich).

He then did the pence in the pound deal with Aviva and others which has cut the overall debt right down.

Only have this as hearsay but it was from a good source.
