I'd suggest an S just because judging by the 3GS, it would have about 6 months to a year

longer before it stopped getting updates of iOS (not promising but it is my guess).

Plus, a lot of the new apps require a bit more power and struggle a bit on the 4.I just upgraded from 4 to 5 and the speed improvement was quite astronomical.
