It's a bit of a vicious circle

He probably plkayed a part in generating it at teh beginning, but once you become a celebrity (especially a mega-celebrity like Beckham) it is self-perpetuating. Everything he does is a media frenzy simply because it's him, regardless of whether he wants it to be or not.
