I don't do this probabte stuff myself, but often see adverts in the Law Society Gazette from solicitors looking for the whereabouts of a will - I don't know if your own solicitor is the sort who will give some helpful pointers or not, but that would be my first recommendation.
I'd get the 'executor' to have a word with the local Probate Registry as they will be able to advise on best course of action for now in terms of tracing a will. Incidently, they may also have some pointers on locating the insurers.
On the insurance point, do you know if the relative used an insurance broker at all? Do you have acces to the individuals bank statements, old correspondence etc to see if you can track payments of premiums?
