The Wire. Give it a few episodes to get going but it's quite peerless imho

Agree with pants that the Shield is also great. I loved the West Wing right off too.

The Sopranos is supposed to be brilliant but I've not seen it.

We've got Homeland and Breaking Bad but haven't started either yet - will watch both in the next few months.
