I said after the cup game that we would be fine once all of our regular first team defensive outfield players were back. Garrido, Turner and Tettey made a hell of a difference.
As you can probably now see we weren't shipping goals because of Bunn, who I must say was very solid today. His kicking was particularly good considering some of the ropey back passes he received. We are spoilt for keepers, our second choice is better than Wigan's number one, who despite making some good saves was at fault for our first goal and was very flappy on crosses...So Bunn is not of Ruddy's standard, but he's still good. Let's not get greedy now...
Another massive difference from Tuesday was the inclusion of Wes. Our off the ball movement in the final third was generally very one dimensional so we had to rely on his dribbling and passing abilities to open up the Wigan defence. Signing the little Irishman to a new deal is a wonderful Christmas present. Likewise, Anthony Pilkington was very effective. I'm sure that he will soon be joining Hoolahan in Trappatoni's Ireland squads. If not then something is seriously wrong.
Holt deserves a lot of credit for the shift he put in today, it's a selfless task that he's performing for us right now, running the channels and sacrificing individual glory for the benefit of the team. Wigan's three centre halfs must have been relieved when he went off. Hopefully his injury isn't too serious. It seems that Steve Morison now has a chance to build on his good work from Tuesday night.
With three tough fixtures coming up before Christmas it was important that we won today's game. 25 points going into the new year is a good base to build from, if we can add even just a couple of extra points to that tally then we will have had a successful December.
