AAT is largely competence-based although there are some exams. CAT is largely exam based.
AAT gives exemptions from the early stages of ACA, CIMA, CIPFA etc as well as ACCA.
CAT (I believe) only gives exemptions for ACCA.
Personally I think AAT is more recognised - unless you're dead set on doing ACCA afterwards.
