I stand on the left leg for balance work. But instead of doing nothing. I level the right leg back and forth (not forwards, just backwards motion)
Then I switch legs
The balance discipline, not only gains extra core strength, but it opens and looses the hips. The levering motion does that naturally. So the 2 combine well
After I got comfortable knowing I can balance on either leg with ease. I incorporated a dumb bell style curl in the arms with no weights, and I do that whilst I'm levering each leg
Might work for you
The main cure for lower back trouble appears to be a lot of abdominal work, but that's not always practical to do at work or at home. So I stick to the stretches, and get bollocked by the physio for not doing the ab work :)
