However, the League Cup games last week got me thinking.
Chelsea fans streaming out, 3-2 down. They get a penalty and all try and come back in again. More fans in the same space than when there were seats and all kind of moving at the same time (unlike people stood in rows in front of their seats who just sort of wait).
A couple of people trip over...
Now yes - I know - more barriers, less people than the bad old days, better stewarding etc etc etc. But having considered and dismissed all previous arguments against safe standing, this is now one I can't quite write off as easily.
The 'culture' of standing IS different; the attitude of standing fans IS different to those who sit. This generation of English supporters' response to certain situations in standing areas is kind of unknowable.
Is it REALLY worth it? I'm fairly sure the answer is 'yes', however I'm not quite as sure as I coud be...
