It's not a case of telling a lad of fourteen not to like suffen, it's a case of an accumulation of subtle manipulations and attitude adjustments over the whole course of his development, to produce a lad who doesn't *need* to be told. Surely?

That's the way I'm looking at fatherhood anyway.
