A lot of people didn't. Crowds much bigger now in general. That's only a part of it but

along with dangerous grounds and the threat of violence it was part and parcel of football at that time.

Football was a very different experience then. Not that there was fighting at every game or even that chant at every game, at FCR anyway.

It is true to an extent that you had to go looking for trouble then but I'm sure everyone who went then got caught up in some scary situations unwiliingly.
