A slap ain't just the kind of slap you get from a pissed off girlfriend you've dumped

or cheated on (not that I've done either of course :-)

It's very similar to a punch if you use the palm of your hand rather than the fingers - old martial art teacher told me that long long time ago - apparently it sounds better in court, "the defendant slapped so and so" vs "punched"
