Have a word with yourself. If the clause was there it was there because he

wouldn't have signed the deal that kept him here otherwise.
Had we refused it you would have been bleating on about what a failure that was.

If he gave us a 3 hour deadline that's unreasonable, perfectly acceptable for us to want longer to get the board together, discuss what they could do to keep him etc before giving him permission.
