Any tactical types about?

So the thing I don't get is why we seem so reluctant to close the oppo down when they get the ball, get some pressure on them, maybe force a mistake. Wet Sham did this against us and really made it hard for us, seems crazy that we were giving players like Gerrad and Suarez so much time on the ball. Is this just down to us playing zonal marking or something? I really can't see a down side to getting at them.
