His contract will say that he is the manager.

Remove that authority and he will walk out, take the club to an industrial tribunal claiming constructive dismissal (ie they gave me no choice but to resign) and win for sure. We would then be faced with paying him the rest of his contract, plus damages for hurt feelings etc.
