re your question below - no, a vintage racing bike shouldn't be much heavier than what you'd get new for the same money.

You would need to take care about the components on it though. Thing is with buying bikes us you've basically got a three way trade-off between strength / quality of components, weight, and price. You have to compromise on one of those.

For the money you want to spend, you're gonna hve to compromise on one of the other two - you're not gonna get something very light and good quality. (Unless you build it yourself.)

If it were me, I'd compromise on the weight bit. It's all very well having something light, but if the gears keep f*cking up then it really doesn't matter how light it is...
