Well, given our lack of hills in London (City Road doesn't count), get a singlespeed.

Many reasons:

1 - they are fun, fun, fun
2 - you will look like a totally rad cool dude, like me
3 - you won't look as cool as the proper fixie-skiddaz, but you will look cooler than the guy with gears, panniers and lycra
4 -you won't be any slower than that guy either, probably faster in traffic.
5 - having only one gear hardens you up
6 - you get more bang for your buck frame and component wise I reckon
7 - you will be able to fix most, if not all, that goes wrong with it yourself, with an allan key set and some youtube guidance
8 Errr
9 That's it.
