I lived over there for 6 years so to be honest, I just knew what sounded right and what didn't!
Time, Manner, Place is the biggest rule.
Gender of words is another biggy, and thent he cases used.
For the essay, make sure you use lots of each type of word - adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs and mix your tenses. This will get you "brownie points"
