depends on the situation.....

in certain circumstances, a jury would find striking the first blow as "excessive force"..... depends on the burglar, his size, demeanour, aggressivness, if armed etc.....

if you are an average sized man and it was some 18 stone power house pulling out your tv plug and you could see a knife in his back pocket then yeah, sure a jury would be lenient if you just belted him one...

but if you're an average sized man and its a young small kid, unarmed, and you just belted him one when there was no apparent physical threat then a jury would find it hard to decide you used "reasonable force in the circumstance".
