"using my words carefully" bit. He makes a point of not saying we are no longer interested in him. He simply says we were interested in the past - which we all know is true anyway. But that says nothing about whether or not we are interested in him at present. I would read from that quote that we still are, or he easily have said specifically that we weren't. Something he clearly doesn't say in that quote.
