Playing budget, not transfer budget

It still amazes me how many fans think of football clubs outgoings primarily in terms of transfer fees, when wages are are far bigger factor (example: why don't we buy Berbatov for ?5m, we could afford that).
We had loads of players last year who proved they were Premiership quality players by comfortably staying up, so they'll all have got whopping great pay rises I suspect. So that's most of the extra budget gone without any new players.
