Irrespective of that, you should go anyway. It's brilliant and there's loads of other good places to visit not far away. Antiquity-wise not far away is Herculaneum which is similarly preserved but smaller and cuter, and Paestum, which is gret old ancient Greek and Roman temples in a field. It's also the area for buffalo mozzarella and Naples isn't far away.
