I did first time I heard it too. It doesn't mean thinking in a way which confers criticism in a negative sense, as you clearly thought (as I did also). It means thinking in a critical manner - trying to see all sides of an argument. Looking at the nuance. Looking into the grey, instead of black and white.
In the old days, when you and I were at school this wasn't called critical thinking, it was just called "thinking".
If you don't do that you end up writing some sort of infantile diatribe you seemingly dont even understand yourself about socialism, Thatcherism, and cultural values, and, crucially, look like you've not read the material being discussed.
