reading this again....why do footie journos use 'admitted' in such a weird way?

?Nigel has done a terrific job at Norwich,? admitted Taylor.

Why is he admitting that? DId he previous say he hadn't? Or has he been trying to sabotage it in some way?

In short - what's wrong with 'said'?
