Dunno why it came in for track events, but when I used to compete

(swimming), it was brought in to get through the timetable efficiently

The devils advocate here is, what seems harsh on the surface, imagine nationwide events when it used to be 3 false starts for a disqualification?

Competitors used to just go before the gun on purpose to get loose and warm up

If people respect rules, there wouldn't be the 1 start rule. Because on the whole, people can't respect rules, that's why it is the way it is
