Wow. I thought I might pass the time by emailing them to whinge

I gave up on that quickly enough. If you want to complain to the BBC you better be a) really annoyed and b) incredibly patient. had I continued with it, I'd have changed my complaint to Why Is It So Difficult To Complain To You People??????????
