Free anti virus . . .

Between my Malwarebytes and Avast they still managed to miss the Met Police trojan that locks your computer and tries to get you to pay a 100 pound "fine" for downloading. It was very tricky to get rid of! What's recommended? My nortan expired and ain't feeling rich enough to update it atm . . . .
