Many of them now have a season of Premier League experience as well

I remember thinking last year when they were a bit naive, eg home to Arsenal, that the same players would be better able to cope next season if we stayed up.

Not to say we couldn't do with a bit more, but I suspect the thinking behind Bennett and particularly Howson was to get them in early for this season with a bit of PL experience.
