riding on the road, get a road bike, off road get a mountain bike...

pays to spend more money on the frame as you can always upgrade the chain set at a later date, once the lower end shimano stuff, like LX, falls apart.....

if you'll be leaving it in public locked up, personally i'd get a second hand scratched one......I've had two shiney new ones nicked over the years......
