Is to continually exercise it as it heals. Did mine about 6 weeks ago (not quite as bad as yours as I could hobble home). My whole foot, right up to halfway up my shin, bruised up. I'm still consciously exercising it today, as the ligaments naturally want to heal themselves stronger and tighter.
If in doubt though, get it x- rayed. I made that mistake a few years ago, assumed I had just sprained, then two years later I went over again, and when I did have an x-ray that time round, turned out I broke it two years before, and it had healed badly.
