No-one had a clue what to do with it, now we have smartphones and all sorts of s**t which would not be possible without understanding of the electron.*

Confirmation of the existence of Higgs-Boson could lead to things, the idea of which would probably melt our 20th century noggins, but will only be of benefit to our children/grandchildren.

*This was an example used by someone on the news last night, so I thought I'd nick it.
