Don't blame him for looking out for the security of his family but

very naive to think this was just about a third year. Money was involved too and I will wager that the new contract he eventually signed was not just for 3 years but included a very substantial salary rise or as you put it "pots more money."

Deep down he probably didn't really want to move but I think he was quite prepared to move if he had to. I also think we were quite prepared to let him go if someone stumped up the asking price until Hughton's recent intervention.
