The 'touristy' sites really is breathtaking, you won't have a lot of time to go off the beaten track. The forum, the pantheon, the Vatican etc are all incredible. Standing inside st peter's is a humbling experience. If the pieta is still inside there, it is the most moving piece of sculpture (and I'm far from religious). Remember climbing the dome onto the roof of st Peter's was fun too.
