I don't think it is a fitness thing

It is a pass and move thing.

We get knackered quickly because we can't keep the ball - it is a lot harder running about after the ball than keeping possession, where you let the ball do most of the work.

These players are OK in the Prem because the other team generally doesn't keep the ball well either but playing against techinically better teams in these tournaments (where it is generally hotter too) makes possession far more important than these players are used to.
