It does kind of piss some of the older players off but I seem to remember we offered Mike Milligan a juicey 3 year deal when he was like 31, and he was completely shot the first year into the deal - so old players and long deals is bad news.
In fact long deals for average players is bad as well. It gives them too much comfort and some will 'take it easy'. (Jim Brennen anyone?). Actually I'd rather clubs inserted a clause in contracts which allowed them to be torn up with a minimal pay off if the player continually plays crap - like a months wages. That way every player has an incentive to work his bollox off all the time.
