Hence why no-one actually does it.

For him to be able to actually go for the ball either the ball or the opposition defence would have to be even nearer the goal than he is. In those circumstances he could pretty much always have got into that position without having taken himself out of the rest of the game by standing around uselessly away from the game.

The offside rule is fine - I have no idea why so many people whinge about it.
