Hard drives fail at any time and usually without warning.

If you want to back up multiple Macs then get a Time Capsule: User Posted Link

Or just to back up the MacBook then buy any USB or FireWire external hard drive and use OS X Time Machine. You can back up the iMac too; but you would need to keep switching the external to each Mac.

There's probably a clever way to use a big old NAS thingy to back up all three pooters; but I don't know much about them.

That should cover pretty much every eventuality unless your house burns down or floods.
