Not going to get into a long debate about this but...

St George is a symbol of the crusades... I just find that very archaic and distasteful... people would only go crazy if the german fans walked round in Nazi uniforms. The Crusades seems to be more acceptable as it was further in the past... but hey I am all for poking fun at ourselves.

As for pointless - St George has nothing to do with england apart from being adopted by the crusading armies as a symbol. Just as Nietzsche was hijacked by the nazi's. St George is also a patron saint of the following places (this bit of copied from Wikipedia) : "England, Georgia, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, C?ceres, Ferrara, Freiburg, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, P?rouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow, Tamworth and the Maltese island of Gozo, as well as of the Scout Movement[3] and a wide range of professions, organizations and disease sufferers."

So imho its archaic and pointless, but people can do whatever they like,.
