but Uruguay leading up to the tournament had a fairly poor qualifying campaign and ended up having to win a play-off against Costa Rica to qualify. They South America's 5th best side going into the World Cup. Even shortly after the world cup I saw them in Santiago against Chile and they were pretty poor. It'a only in the past 18 months they've been very strong.
