That's true

and "the holocaust" is not unique. What we call the crusades were religious genocides too (against Muslims and by the French against the Cathars). there are plenty of other examples.

I agree that we must look forward but I think the lessons of Auschwitz, which are not just "look where bigotry leads" but ate also around the very many very ordinary people without whom the Holocaust shouldn't have happened. Most of those people were not anti-Semites yet they acted the way they did. It's important to understand that and think through how we'd react in the circumstances they found themselves in. What is clearly unspeakable evil when seen from 60000 feet can seem very ordinary as part of someone's day to day.
