though that was in the 70's when the pavilion was new. I never played there; as a volunteer scorer I was too valuable and I only got a handful of games for the second XI, all away.
To be fair to the VC he might have been right, but I had warned him I was a rubbish umpire.
On the subject of trigger fingers, Bill Alley, Aussie ex-Somerset player and 1st class ump in the 70s was a champion. We used to refer to him as Bill Allley and his Magic Finger. If you shout loud enough, up it goes.
