Last Night

Colleagues keep asking me whu I seem to be so dazed and confused today, I tell them I'm still in a state of shock, and have been since approx 8:30pm last night.

It has long been the suggestion that we do in fact have a realy good side and it is only a matter of time til we fly back up the league. Although we do have some good strikers and on the whole a decent defence, without Safri our midfield is simply NOWHERE NEAR good enough to get us out of this league. (Hucks aside - though is he really a midfielder?). This is a fact - and disgusting that this should be the case given the resources we have had over other sides in this league.

The midfields I have seen in the last 2 matches have been amongst the poorest I can ever remember in a city side.
JARRETT: Complete nonentity of a player. How could he possibly have stood out to our scouts?
BRENNAN: Yet again Brennan flatters to deceive - occasionally looks decent with some easy sideways passing and the fact he has a left foot but ultimately he lacks the power and confidence to ever truly impress.
CHARLTON: Absolutely scandalous that an ageing short left back can be expected to boss central midfield - I feel sorry for him.
HENDERSON: - I will always back him off the pitch and would never ever boo him. As he's a local lad would be even sweeter for him to do well. Sadly he simply isn't up to the grade of a club that wants to challenge to win this league. Simply too small and lightweight, let down by poor passing and lack of true speed.
HUGHES: I've said it since the very first match - Hughes is simply not a good enough footballer technically. I admire his spirit and workrate - and he seems a top bloke. But we needed class in this side not a middle distance runner. He will have effective games - but up against good sides his fundamental inadequacies have been exposed time and again.

Without Safri we are a mess. The biggest failing of Worthington is that this situation has been allowed to develop. No spark, no quality passing ( I find it actually quite insulting to be told by our manager how well we've been passing it, when I can see for myself this is just a myth), no goal threat. There were some players out there this summer : Ifill and Koumas for instance who were available, sadly we we will never know whether these were even targets - but one surely feels in July we were a more attractive option than Cardiff or Sheff Utd.
