Depends

on what you want your laptop for, how much you like technical tinkering and how important immediate cash outlay is against ease of use, longevity etc.

Opinion here seems split, there are users of both and some who use both so plenty of opinions available and amongst the opinions some useful advice :) A mac won't be the cheapest option, but are generally well made, last well, easy to use and less susceptible to viruses. Windows has a bigger user base, although which version becomes a consideration with Windows 8 in the offing. Alongside that is the variety of manufacturers, each with different strengths/weaknesses. If you are more adventurous/technically inclined then build your own, or get a cheap basic computer that you upgrade and customise, using a variation of Linux or Chrome - be prepared to sink a lot of time 'tweaking' and solving little niggles if you go this route.

If not happened already, I believe there is a particular Windows laptop that has sometimes been referred to as the Wrath laptop that someone will post the link for.
