I think the main counter to the claim that Messi is best ever

is that he has only played for one club and that club has been the best in the world throughout that time, not just because of him.

Barcelona would probably have dominated european football for the past five years if they had, for example, Aguero or Ronaldo up front instead of Messi.

The real test would be to go to Atletico Madrid or Liverpool, for example, and win the league with them. - not going to happen though.

That is what sets Maradona and Cruyff apart.
