works for Messi, he is massively protected, he's from a decent middle class Argentine family, a good lad and of course a brilliant footballer that has concentrated just on football and nothing else, a recent interviewI saw he looked a bit sad when he talked about other things in his life (or not) which he clearly hasn't been allowed to have yet, like a family. He plays in the best team I have ever seen who are close to unbeatable when at full strength and Messi looks the best when in that team. The protection from refs in the modern game is also a huge plus for him, Maradona and Pele were both kicked out of games far too often.

This is the opposite of Maradona.
