Awarded the title of Best Sports Pub in the Eastern Region at the 2011 Great British Pub Awards, The Gardeners Arms ? or ?The Murderers? as it has been known since 1895 ? gained its gruesome nickname after a former landlady?s daughter Millie was murdered by her estranged husband, Frank Miles.
According to publican Philip Cutter, who has been researching the pub?s history throughout his 24 years working there, Miles escaped a death sentence after a petition of more than 22,000 signatures convinced the judge to show clemency towards him on grounds of extreme provocation.
