At first glance it may look like a strange decision

But then it's not like they're top and it's promotion or nothing for them. There's a chance they may f**k it up (again) and the Board aren't prepared to take a chance on his failing again.

I suppose you could equate it to a team on the fringes of the relegation zone also wanting a change. Wolves obviously springs to mind.
